Unstitched
Acrylic, charcoal, mixed media on canvas
“Unstitched” presents a figure that stands as both self-portrait and emblem — a personal mascot for living honestly, without contortion.
The stitched lines, scratches, pins, and colour fragments aren’t wounds so much as witness marks: the quiet evidence of a life shaped by inherited narratives, early dynamics, and long periods of self-doubt. The figure isn’t defined by what it has survived — it simply acknowledges that it once absorbed what was never its own, and has since learned to release it.
The doll-like form, patched and reconstructed, reflects the process of re-sewing the self from the inside out. Its texture speaks to the moment someone realises they can stop shrinking, stop over-owning what others project, and stand whole on their own terms.
With its oversized, alert eyes, the character becomes a talisman of clarity — a reminder that authenticity begins when you stop drinking from emotional wells that were never yours to begin with. The colourful seams across the body suggest ongoing repair, but also creativity: the freedom to rebuild identity rather than live inside someone else’s.
“Unstitched” refuses melodrama. There are no heroes or villains here. Instead, the work honours the simple, liberating truth that everyone has the right to define themselves — without apology, without inheriting shame, and without buying into another person’s story.
For the artist, this figure has become a mascot: a quiet companion, standing as a visual prompt to stay grounded, individual, and self-directed. The pins and scribbles may remain, but they no longer bind. They are reminders — not threats.
Ultimately, “Unstitched” is about sovereignty and reclamation:
the courage to hold your own centre,
to keep what is true,
to let go of what isn’t,
and to stand, imperfect but free, in your own life.
