Excavation

From the Excavation series

Excavation is the central work of the Excavation series — the point at which accumulation reaches saturation.

Where Presence establishes orientation and awareness, this work absorbs density. Symbols, fragments of language, incidental marks, and chromatic tensions are layered into the surface, buried, disturbed, and partially recovered. Meaning is not composed; it gathers.

The painting behaves less like an image than a site. Layers are embedded, submerged beneath matte sediment, scraped back, sanded, and reworked. Nothing was placed to remain visible. Everything was laid down with the expectation of loss.

A vertical fissure runs through the field, formed through pressure rather than design. Around it, half-legible glyphs, colour ghosts, and residual forms sit like artefacts from different strata — remnants that survived erasure rather than declarations that demanded attention.

What remains is not clarity, but evidence.

This work marks the point where interpretation strains under its own weight. Systems collide. Language fractures. Intention, belief, and structure coexist without hierarchy. The surface holds scars, not symbols — traces of decisions made, undone, and lived with.

As the centre of the Excavation series, Excavation represents saturation: the moment when accumulation reaches its limit and further uncovering no longer reveals, only disrupts.

Series Context

Excavation sits between Presence and What Remains.

Read together, the three works move from awareness, through saturation, into withdrawal — tracing the conditions under which meaning is sought, accumulated, and ultimately released.

This series is complete.
